It is not a single city or municipal government. Instead, the valley includes the incorporated cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas along with large unincorporated areas governed by Clark County.

The developed portions of these cities and communities connect across much of the valley, which can make municipal boundaries difficult to recognize on the ground. A person can travel between Las Vegas, Paradise, Spring Valley, Henderson, and other communities without encountering an obvious break in development.

The Las Vegas Valley is also smaller than Clark County. Clark County extends well beyond the valley and includes communities and cities in other parts of Southern Nevada.

Las Vegas Valley vs. City of Las Vegas vs. Clark County

The City of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Valley, and Clark County describe three different geographic areas. Much of the famous resort corridor along Las Vegas Boulevard lies in the unincorporated communities of Paradise and Winchester, which are governed by Clark County.

This includes many of the hotels, casinos, entertainment venues, and attractions that visitors commonly associate with Las Vegas. The City of Las Vegas begins farther north along the Las Vegas Boulevard corridor, while the central and southern portions of the Strip remain outside the city limits.

The distinction helps explain why a place can have a Las Vegas mailing address and be universally associated with Las Vegas without actually being located inside the incorporated city.

Is Boulder City Part of the Las Vegas Valley?

Boulder City is in Clark County and is closely connected to the broader Las Vegas region, but it is generally treated as outside the Las Vegas Valley Urban Area. Clark County classifies Boulder City as an outlying city rather than one of the incorporated cities within the valley urban area.

The city is southeast of Henderson near Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, which places it beyond the main continuous urban development of Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas.

This distinction helps explain why Boulder City sometimes appears in broader discussions of the Las Vegas metropolitan region even though it is not counted among the three incorporated cities of the Las Vegas Valley.

How large is the Las Vegas Valley?

The Las Vegas Valley covers roughly 600 square miles in Southern Nevada. It is a broad desert basin surrounded by mountain ranges, with most of the region’s urban development concentrated across the valley floor.

The developed area stretches across Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, and large unincorporated communities such as Paradise, Spring Valley, Enterprise, and Sunrise Manor. Development becomes less continuous toward the edges of the valley as the urban area approaches surrounding mountains and desert land.

The geographic size of the valley should not be confused with the much larger area of Clark County, which extends far beyond the Las Vegas Valley.

Las Vegas Valley vs. Las Vegas Metropolitan Area

The Las Vegas Valley and the Las Vegas metropolitan area are related but not identical geographic concepts.
