It includes Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, and much of the Las Vegas Valley, which makes it the clear population center of the state.

Washoe County is the second major population center in Nevada because it includes Reno, Sparks, and the core of the Reno-Sparks area. After Clark County and Washoe County, Nevada’s county population ranking drops sharply into a much smaller tier of counties and county-level jurisdictions, including Lyon County, Carson City, Elko County, Nye County, and Douglas County.

That sharp drop is the most important thing to understand about Nevada counties by population. Nevada has a few heavily populated urban counties, then a much larger number of rural counties where small cities, county seats, mining areas, ranching regions, highways, public land, and desert geography shape the population pattern.

Nevada Counties Ranked by Population

The table below ranks Nevada’s 16 counties plus Carson City by population. Clark County includes the Las Vegas Valley, while Washoe County includes the Reno-Sparks area. Most of Nevada’s largest cities, suburbs, unincorporated communities, employers, airports, universities, hospitals, and major transportation corridors are concentrated in these two counties.

County

Main Population Area

Major Incorporated Cities

Major Unincorporated Places / Local Areas

Why It Ranks High

Clark County

Las Vegas Valley

Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Mesquite

Paradise, Enterprise, Spring Valley, Sunrise Manor, Whitney, Winchester, Summerlin

Contains Nevada’s largest metro area and most of the state’s population

Washoe County

Reno-Sparks area

Reno, Sparks

Sun Valley, Spanish Springs, Incline Village, North Valleys, Verdi area

Contains Northern Nevada’s main metro area and second-largest county population

One important detail is that Clark County’s population is not limited to the City of Las Vegas. Large unincorporated places such as Paradise, Enterprise, Spring Valley, and Sunrise Manor add heavily to Clark County’s population total. That is one reason Clark County ranks so far ahead of every other Nevada county.

Washoe County has a similar, smaller pattern. Reno and Sparks are the main incorporated cities, but nearby places such as Sun Valley, Spanish Springs, Incline Village, and the North Valleys area also contribute to the county’s population base. This makes Washoe County the clear population center of Northern Nevada.

Nevada’s Middle-Tier Counties by Population

After Clark County and Washoe County, Nevada’s county population ranking becomes much more balanced. The next group includes Lyon County, Carson City, Elko County, Douglas County, and Nye County. None of these counties are close to Washoe County in population, but each plays an important role in a different part of the state.

County / Jurisdiction

Population

Main Population Pattern

Lyon County

66,154

Growing western Nevada county with Fernley, Dayton, Silver Springs, and Yerington

Carson City

61,888

Nevada’s state capital and county-equivalent jurisdiction

Elko County

58,031

Northeastern Nevada population center with Elko, Carlin, Wells, and West Wendover

Douglas County

57,149

Western Nevada county with Minden, Gardnerville, Stateline, and Lake Tahoe-area communities

Nye County

52,306

Large rural county where Pahrump accounts for much of the population

This middle tier shows that Nevada’s population is not only divided between Las Vegas and Reno. Smaller regional centers also matter, especially in western, northeastern, and rural southern Nevada. Lyon County is tied to growth near Fernley and Dayton, Carson City functions as the state capital, Elko County anchors northeastern Nevada, Douglas County connects the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe area, and Nye County includes Pahrump, one of Nevada’s largest unincorporated communities.

Rural Nevada Counties With Smaller Populations

The lower half of Nevada’s county population ranking is made up mostly of rural counties. These counties often cover large areas, but their population is spread across small county seats, mining areas, ranching communities, highway stops, public land, and remote desert or mountain regions.

County

Population

County Seat

Local Population Context

Churchill County

27,364

Fallon

Centered around Fallon, Lahontan Valley, agriculture, and Naval Air Station Fallon

Humboldt County

17,918

Winnemucca

Northern Nevada county tied to Winnemucca, I-80, ranching, and regional services

White Pine County

10,236

Ely

Eastern Nevada county centered around Ely and the Great Basin area

Pershing County

7,332

Lovelock

Small northern Nevada county along the I-80 corridor

Lander County

5,998

Battle Mountain

Central Nevada county with mining, ranching, and highway-corridor communities

Mineral County

4,702

Hawthorne

Western Nevada county centered around Hawthorne and Walker Lake

Lincoln County

4,667

Pioche

Rural southeastern Nevada county with Caliente, Pioche, Panaca, and Alamo

Storey County

4,462

Virginia City

Small county tied to Virginia City and the historic Comstock region

Eureka County

1,832

Eureka

Very small central Nevada county with Eureka and Crescent Valley

Esmeralda County

1,217

Goldfield

Nevada’s least populated county, centered around Goldfield, Dyer, and Fish Lake Valley

These counties show why population alone does not fully describe Nevada’s county geography. A county can rank low by population while still covering an important part of the state’s mining history, transportation network, rural economy, public-land geography, or local government structure.

Why Carson City Is Included in Nevada County Population Rankings

Carson City is included in Nevada county population rankings because it functions as a county-level jurisdiction. It is Nevada’s state capital and operates as an independent city and county-equivalent jurisdiction rather than a traditional county.

That makes Carson City different from places such as Las Vegas, Reno, Henderson, Sparks, Elko, or Fallon. Those cities are located inside counties, while Carson City functions as both the city and the county-level government area.

For population rankings, Carson City is usually listed alongside Nevada’s 16 counties because it fills the same county-level role in statewide data. That is why this page ranks 16 counties plus Carson City, instead of listing Carson City as part of another county.

Population vs Land Area in Nevada Counties

County population and county land area are two different ways to understand Nevada. A county can rank high by population because it contains a major urban area, while another county can cover a much larger part of the state with far fewer residents.

Clark County ranks first by population because it contains the Las Vegas Valley, but population does not mean it is the largest county by land area. Rural counties such as Nye County, Elko County, Lincoln County, White Pine County, and Humboldt County cover large geographic areas, but their populations are much smaller than Clark County or Washoe County.

That difference is important for Nevada because much of the state is rural, mountainous, desert, public land, mining land, ranching land, or long-distance highway corridor. A population ranking shows where people live, while a land-area ranking shows how much physical space each county covers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nevada Counties by Population

What is the largest county in Nevada by population?

Clark County is the largest county in Nevada by population. It includes Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Paradise, Enterprise, Spring Valley, and much of the Las Vegas Valley.

What are the five largest counties in Nevada by population?

The five largest Nevada county-level jurisdictions by population are Clark County, Washoe County, Lyon County, Carson City, and Elko County.

What is the least populated county in Nevada?

Esmeralda County is the least populated county in Nevada. It is a rural county in southwestern Nevada with Goldfield as its county seat.

What county is Las Vegas in?

Las Vegas is in Clark County. The county includes several of the state’s largest cities and unincorporated communities, including Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Paradise, Enterprise, Spring Valley, and Sunrise Manor.

Are Nevada’s largest counties by population also the largest by land area?

Not always.
